Attorneys for convicted ‘Cannibal Cop’: client is ‘innocent’

This undated photo submitted into evidence by Assistant Federal Defender Julia L. Gatto shows Gilberto Valle with his daughter. Attorneys for Gilberto Valle, the former NYPD officer dubbed the “Cannibal Cop”, filed papers last week with the court asking a judge to throw out his kidnapping convictions prior to sentencing.

The motion states that Valle is innocent. “He is guilty only of having deviant, sexually sadistic fantasies and sharing them with like-minded strangers,” the court papers state.

A jury in Manhattan Federal Court convicted the 28-year-old disgraced police officer March 12 of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and illegal access of a government computer database resulting from a bizarre plot to kidnap, torture, kill, cook, and eat more than 100 women.

Valle’s sentencing, scheduled for June 19, has been postponed indefinitely while prosecutors and the judge review his request for a new trial. The “Cannibal Cop” could face up to life in prison.
