‘In love’ – Former teacher and NFL cheerleader now dating ‘victim’ after admitting affair
Former high school teacher and NFL cheerleader Sarah Jones, 27, admitted last week to having sex with her underage student, Cody York, and agreed to a plea agreement for reduced charges that helped her avoid jail time. This week Jones and her now 18-year-old beau are telling the world they are in love.
“I don’t like being called the victim because I wasn’t,” says York. “She never did anything to me.”
The two will tell their story together on “Dateline NBC” tonight, Friday Oct. 19 at 10 p.m. EST.
Jones admits that what she did was wrong. “There is no gray area,” says Jones. “It is wrong for a teacher to have a relationship that crosses a line with a student.
York however said that the ordeal was worth it. “I always looked at her as a very close friend. She was my support system. Outside of school, it just started coming along,” says York. “Yeah, [the relationship] was worth it. I never in a million years thought [the arrest and trial] would ever happen.”
“I love everything about her,” says York. “She can break down in front of me, she can be her worst in front of me and it makes me love her even more.”
Jones says she reciprocates those feelings. “If you can love someone at their lowest, that says a lot. He says, ‘Sarah, you look so beautiful in your mugshot’ and that’s how I know he really loves me … We made a poor choice together but that doesn’t mean we can’t find happiness at the end of the day.”
Jones pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and custodial interference and received five years of probation, no jail time, and she did not have to register as a sex offender. The plea agreement also prevented potentially salacious text messages between Jones and York from being read in a public trial.
