Judge hopeful trial will be held in slaying

WASHINGTON (AP) — The judge in the case of a slain German journalist and socialite in Washington says he is hoping there can be a trial this fall.

Albrecht Muth is awaiting trial in the August killing of his wife, 91-year-old Viola Drath, inside the couple’s home. He appeared in court Thursday.

The case has been on hold amid concerns about his mental health and a pattern of seemingly bizarre behavior. A doctor’s evaluation this week concluded that he was incompetent for trial. Prosecutors say their own experts will start evaluating him soon.

Superior Court Judge Russell Canan encouraged Muth to keep making progress toward competency so that he can ultimately stand trial.
