Lawyers support Albrecht Muth’s right to represent himself in trial

WASHINGTON — Lawyers for a German man charged with killing his elderly wife say he should be allowed to represent himself at his upcoming trial despite his ongoing hunger strike.

The lawyers for Albrecht Muth, who is scheduled for trial later this month in D.C. Superior Court, are asking a judge to reconsider an earlier ruling that bars Muth from acting as his own attorney.

They say Muth is starving himself for religious purposes and has a constitutional right to exercise his religion. They also say he has a right to represent himself in court if he wants.

The 48-year-old Muth is charged with killing 91-year-old Viola Drath in the couple’s row home in Georgetown in August 2011. He has denied any involvement in her death.
