Photo AP The Arizona Republic, Rob Schumacher, PoolPHOENIX (AP) — Jodi Arias’ lawyers have asked to withdraw from case and say they won’t call any witnesses in penalty phase of her trial.

The stunning declaration came Monday after the judge denied their request for a mistrial based on a key witness receiving death threats. In protest to the judge’s decision, defense lawyers Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott asked to withdraw. Their request was promptly denied.

The attorneys then said they won’t call any witnesses to testify on Arias’ behalf as jurors consider a life or death sentence, sending the court into recess as lawyers work to resolve the next step.

Arias and an ex-boyfriend had been expected to speak to jurors before the panel begins deliberating whether to sentence the 32-year-old Arias to life in prison or execution for murdering her lover in 2008

Many heartless individuals.Going for the kill !We forgive and that differs us fr. animals.
He was no angel either.

Marilynn says:

Of course Travis was no angel–simply human with all the weaknesses that come with that. Sad thing is, there was another side to him that made him a person of worth. No matter what you said, Travis DID NOT deserved to be slaughtered in the manner Arias did. Her only redeeming quality is that she finally told the truth, even though it was twisted to make her look like a victim. The way I see it, she didn’t have to keep going back to Travis repeatedly. She was obsessed with the man.

Gail H says:

Give her life without parole. Saves us all money and she gets time to think.

elizabeth911 says:

I don’t know how the legal system works, but if she gets death, does that mean Nurmi is stuck representing her through appeals? If so no wonder he’s throwing this temper tantrum.

Judy says:

Yes, that is correct. If she makes the appeal, Nurmi and Willmott will have to follow through. They are stuck with her until the bitter end. Normally if they ask to withdraw again the State will deny that as well.

Patricia Nelson says:

Once again Mr. MARTINEZ looked into shady people for her, they wanted no part of this trial, she is on her own. SHE WILL GO STRAIGHT TO DEATH ROW, NURMI BUYING TIME, ALMOST OVER.

Washington says:

I mean what, enough already. They need to call it a wrap. They have done more damage, and everyone is tired of it. Tired of JA and all her camp, period! They know what the outcome is going to be. JA lead everybody into a train wreck! To me it is a waste and totally disrespectful to the Alexander family, the jury, officers of the court, people of Arizona, and to us. Time to get her done!

Patricia Nelson says:

Nurmi needs to shut the hell up, he keeps putting the trial to a halt once again.

Terri says:

Nurmi needs a diaper change.
Always crying about something .

Gina says:

The talking heads on HLN (especially Beth Karas) shouldn’t be showing off and giving the defense legal excuses to delay the outcome of this trial. This is a slap in the face to the legal system and Jodi is a waste of money and oxygen. Jury shouldn’t worry about giving Jodi the lethal injection. She will have decades to go thru her appeals.
