Ohio grand jury rules fatal police shooting was justified
CLEVELAND (AP) — An Ohio grand jury has agreed with a prosecutor’s finding, ruling that a fatal shooting by a police officer in a Cleveland suburb was justified and reasonable.
Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Prosecutor Tim McGinty announced the grand jury decision Friday while commending Richmond Heights officer Greg Patterson’s actions.
Patterson fatally shot Carlumandarlo Zaramo on Dec. 6 after Zaramo’s wife told dispatchers her 46-year-old husband had a gun and had threatened to kill her and their 11-year-old son.
Authorities say Zaramo initially agreed to let officers take him to a hospital and asked for warmer clothes. Officers followed Zaramo to a bedroom where he stepped into a closet and grabbed a pistol off a shelf. Patterson fired six shots after Zaramo wounded a sergeant who had tried to wrestle the gun away.
