Three more men found guilty in Zumba prostitution scandal
Three more men charged in the Alexis Wright prostitution scandal were found guilty Wednesday of misdemeanor charges of engaging a prostitute and received fines ranging from $600 to $1,000.
The three men found guilty in Biddeford District Court are Kenneth Fairbanks, 54, who was fined $1,000 plus fees, Claude Palmer Jr., 47, who was fined $700 plus fees, and Paul Main, 43, who was fined $600 plus fees. There have been 62 men charged with paying for sexual activities with the former Zumba instructor. As of Wednesday seven have now been found guilty.
York County Deputy District Attorney Justina McGettigan said the amount of the fines varies because some of the men engaged in multiple visits.
Wright, 29, is accused of running a one-woman prostitution service out of her Zumba studio, Pura Vida, in the upscale town of Kennebunk, Maine. The scandal has created a media frenzy in the small town, and authorities continue to feed the public’s appetite by releasing the names of her “Johns” in small batches. Wright allegedly kept meticulous records of her clients and their activities and authorities say she videotaping her encounters without the consent of the men. Several of the high profile names revealed thus far include a former mayor of South Portland, James Soule, and the former Kennebunk High varsity hockey coach Donald Hill.
Initially 21 men were scheduled to appear on Wednesday. Nine men requested jury trials and had their cases transferred to York County Superior Court. The other nine men hired attorneys, filed not guilty pleas, and filed the required “acknowledgment” of charges so that they did not have to appear in court and face the cameras.
A new list of names is expected to be released Friday. The next court appearances for Wright’s “Johns” are currently scheduled for December 19, January 23 and February 20.
