Trial date Set for alleged Canadian cannibal Luka Magnotta
The trial for accused killer Luka Magnotta is scheduled to begin September 15, 2014, a judge decided in a hearing on Monday.
Justice Andre Vincent denied a request by defense attorney Luc Leclair to start the trial in April 2014, stating that there were no availabilities before September.
“I expected an earlier date, but it’s a busy courthouse,” Leclair told reporters. “I’m not completely surprised.”
The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
Magnotta is accused of murdering and dismembering Chinese national and Concordia University student Jun Lin in May 2012 and then mailing his body parts to destinations throughout Canada.
The former model and porn actor is charged with murder, committing an indignity to a body, publishing obscene material, criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament, and mailing obscene and indecent material.
