Clayton Whittemore

Trial date set for New Hartford man accused of dorm room slaying

A Rochester judge set a trial date for the New Hartford man accused of brutally murdering his girlfriend in her SUNY Brockport dorm room on Sept. 29, 2012.

The trial is scheduled to start Sept. 30, 2013, in Monroe County in upstate New York.

Clayton Whittemore was indicted on charges of second degree murder by the New York Grand Jury in the death of 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut. According to authorities, Whittemore admitted that he “just snapped” and beat Kogut to death with a curling iron.

Second degree murder carries a sentence of 15 years to life in prison, depending on the circumstances of the crime.

Defense attorneys for Whittemore were in State Supreme Court in Rochester on Wednesday arguing that the police unlawfully arrested Whittemore and searched his car without probable cause at the Thruway rest stop where he was found.

Whittemore and Kogut both attended New Hartford for high school where Whittemore was a standout hockey player and Kogut was a swimmer. After graduation Whittemore attended Utica College.
